Carbon removal gets talked about as a goal: a number on a slide, a tonne pledged, a target for 2030.
Rarely is it talked about as something built.
But it is built. Biomass has to be collected from suppliers, not just sourced on paper. A pyrolysis reactor has to run at the right temperature, batch after batch, not just in a lab. Every tonne removed has to be measured, logged, and verified, not assumed. Biochar has to be applied in soil or construction to add real value, not just given for free to claim credits.
That's infrastructure. At LongStraw Carbon, we build it in three layers:
Industrial Infrastructure – the plants, processes, and operating discipline that turn biomass into durable carbon removal at scale.
Data Infrastructure – the measurement, verification, and digital trail that turns “we think we removed X” into “we can prove we removed X”.
Built for the Market – designing the whole system from day one to deliver real, bankable value to end customers: CDR buyers who need transparency, certainty and quality, and buyers of biochar, wood vinegar, and other co‑products who need performance, not just a story.
Carbon removal that only works once isn't infrastructure. Carbon removal that works the same way, tonne after tonne, year after year, and is designed around real customers from the start that is. Over the next few weeks, we are breaking down what that actually takes, one layer at a time.
The three lenses:
1. Industrial Infrastructure
This is the hardware plus the know‑how: the reactor, feed and quench systems, material handling, storage, safety systems plus the SOPs, quality control, maintenance regimes, and throughput targets that make the plant run consistently at multi‑thousand‑tonne scale. It’s not just “a plant that can run”; it’s a plant that does run, reliably, day after day, with the discipline of an industrial asset, not a pilot.
2. Data Infrastructure
Sensors, batch logs, weighbridge data, MRV protocols, third‑party verification, and the full digital trail from biomass intake to final carbon storage. This layer is what allows a buyer, auditor, or registry to look at a project and say: “We can see exactly what went in, what came out, and how much carbon is durably removed.” It’s the difference between a claim and a certificate.
3. Built for the Market
Too many projects treat the market as an afterthought: build the plant, then figure out who will buy the carbon or the biochar. We start from the customer:
CDR buyers who want transparent, durable, well‑verified tonnes with clear permanence and co‑benefits.
Biochar and co‑product buyers (agriculture, construction, materials) who need consistent quality, performance data, and reliable supply.
The plant, the process, and the data are all designed to serve these users. That’s what makes the carbon removal bankable and the business sustainable, instead of a one‑off demonstration.
